Marfa Food Pantry: 2020-2021 Review

Over the course of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Marfa Food Pantry (MFP) continuously adapted its distribution methods to best serve the increasing number of those in need. The graph below demonstrates the growth we saw over this last year. At the start of the pandemic, MFP was serving on average 35 households, but by November of 2020, MFP was serving over 120 households. Since April 2021, we have begun to see a slight but regularly declining trend, with distribution now serving between 60 and 90 households per distribution.

Graph spans from February 2020 to April 2021.

As the number of people in need increased, so did our need for volunteers. Volunteers help us in many ways. Some arrive early to prepare the food packages for distribution, while others arrive later to facilitate loading the food packages into each vehicle. In addition, MFP has a large garden that has been expanding throughout the pandemic, thanks to the direction of Peggy O’Brien and community volunteers. We are pleased to be able to put something fresh from the garden in each package.

Genevieve Bassham and her friends have been serving the Marfa community through the food pantry since 1998. Because of their decades of service, Marfa Food Pantry was positioned to serve the community during this trying year. As we continue to heal together, we are grateful to all of our volunteers throughout the years that enable Marfa Food Pantry to be an alleviating force within the community.

Throughout the pandemic, MFP distributed food two times a month. With the ending of federal funding for pandemic relief in June, MFP is transitioning back to a once a month food distribution plan, distributing on the fourth Thursday of every month. However, if any Marfa resident finds themselves or someone they know in a food crisis between distributions, they may contact us and we can arrange food for them. (432) 295-1447
