Post #2: End of Summer 2021

At the end of July, Marfa Food Pantry began a collaboration with Big Bend Conservation Alliance in order to provide more organic, local produce to the food pantry clients. The collaboration is called: Marfa Harvest / Cosecha Marfa. Through connecting the gardens of Marfa Food Pantry and Judd Foundation, Marfa Harvest / Cosecha Marfa is able to give away fresh produce every Thursday. Local community gardeners have also gotten involved by donating the excess of their summer harvest to the effort.

Along with combating food insecurity, Marfa Harvest / Cosecha Marfa is also a way to “cross pollinate,” a way to share knowledge about caring for the land and each other. A big thank you to Peggy O’Brien, the main caretaker of the food pantry garden, and to Jesse Dominguez, the main caretaker of the Judd Foundation garden, for their attention to tiny seedlings and for nourishing us all with the gifts that come from time spent with plants.

The Marfa Food Pantry participated in the annual Marfa Lights Festival last month, and our very own Genevieve Bassham was elected to be the parade marshal. She lead the parade surrounded by fellow members of the Jumano Nation. “Marfa, Texas is the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Jumano Nation, Lipan Apache, and Mescalero Apache past and present (Big Bend Conservation Alliance).”

Thank you to our many volunteers who work in the garden and at monthly distributions. Because of you, Marfa Food Pantry will be able to carry the warmth from the sun into the autumn and winter months. Food distribution occurs on the third Thursday of every month from 4-6. Marfa Harvest / Cosecha Marfa gives away produce from 5:30-6:30 every Thursday except for the third Thursday. If any Marfa resident finds themselves or someone they know in a food crisis, they may contact us at: (432) 295-1447.
